Rachel's Challenge: A life changing event comes to our school system!
April 20, 1999, was one of the most tragic days in school history. Craig Scott, a sophomore, was in the library of Columbine High School as two gunman opened fire killing Scott's sister, two friends he was with, as well as nine other students and one teacher. Scott's sister, Rachel, was the first student to be killed. In the days and weeks following the Columbine tragedy, the Scott family found Rachel's six diaries, poems, and other drawings, which reflected her philosophy and beliefs about life, and challenged others to show kindness to everyone. "I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion, then it will start a chain reaction of the same. People will never know how far a little kindness can go," Rachel wrote in an essay a month before her death. Rachel's Challenge grew out of the Scott family's desire to continue the work that Rachel started in her daily life.
We are really excited about the event. We think it is going to be great for not only our students, but our faculty, staff, parents, and community as well.
The clip below is a CNN interview with Craig Scott (our speaker) this past April on the 10-year anniversary. I think it will open up some discussion.
